This post is the flip side - what you can do instead to actually influence people.

Subscribe now

So here's something that's been bugging me for years.

You know how you can casually show someone a funny TikTok and they'll watch it, laugh, maybe even share it? No problem. But the moment you bring up climate change or mention anything about the environment to someone who clearly doesn't give a shit, you get that look. You know the one. The "oh great, here comes the lecture" look.

And if you keep bringing it up? Congrats, you're now the crazy environmentalist person everyone avoids at parties.

Meanwhile, these same people are spending hours every day on social media. Apps that literally make their lives worse, according to basically every study ever done. But they can't spend 30 seconds sorting their trash properly.

It's maddening.

As someone who actually cares about whether we have a livable planet in 20 years, this dynamic makes you feel completely alone. You're out here recycling your containers while your neighbor throws everything in one bag. You're researching the carbon footprint of your lunch while billionaires are taking private jets to get their hair cut or whatever.

You start wondering why you even bother. Life gets busy, you get tired of being the only one who cares, and honestly? A lot of people just give up. It could be you tommorrow.

But what if there was a way to actually get through to people? What if you could make caring about the environment feel as natural as checking Instagram?

It's not impossible, you just need to think like a UX designer

So I was thinking about this the other day.

Facebook didn't become addictive by accident. Neither did TikTok, Instagram, or any of these apps. There are literally teams of psychologists working behind the scenes, figuring out exactly how to make you come back. They're not fighting human psychology - they're using it.

As a UX designer, I've used this stuff professionally for years. We never had to convince anyone that scrolling was important. We just made it irresistible.

So what if we could do the same thing, but for actually useful behavior?

There's this guy at Stanford, BJ Fogg, who figured out the basic formula for changing behavior. It's called the Fogg Behavior Model, and it's stupidly simple:

For someone to do something, three things have to happen at the same time: they need to be motivated, they need to be able to do it, and something needs to remind them to do it.

<a Motivation + Ability + Prompt = Behavior.

If any one of those is missing, the behavior doesn't happen.

And here's the interesting part - motivation and ability can trade off. If someone really, really wants to do something, they'll figure out how even if it's hard. If something is super easy, people will do it even if they don't care that much.

Think about your phone. You probably don't wake up every morning desperate to check your notifications. But it's so easy - it's right there, it buzzes at you, you barely have to think. So you do it.

I've designed digital products around this exact principle. Make the desired action the path of least resistance, give people just enough motivation, and prompt them at the right moment. It works every single time.

Subscribe now

Why your approach keeps failing (and it's probably not what you think)

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!CFsF!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Ff42d1c89-7415-4db5-97b2-f3b7b774fd8e_637x417.jpeg" width="637" height="417" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/f42d1c89-7415-4db5-97b2-f3b7b774fd8e_637x417.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":417,"width":637,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"Reduce. Most environmentalists assume he just doesn't care enough. So they try to fix his motivation - show him scary climate documentaries, lecture him about polar bears, whatever.

But what if that's not the problem?

Using Fogg's model, there are actually three possible reasons he's not recycling:

Maybe he's not motivated. He doesn't think it makes a difference, or he doesn't believe he'll personally suffer if he doesn't do it.

Maybe he can't actually do it. He doesn't know which stuff goes where, or he doesn't have space for multiple bins, or the recycling pickup schedule is confusing.

Maybe he just forgets. He supports recycling in theory, but when he's rushing to get the trash out, he doesn't think about it.

The solution is completely different depending on which one it is. And here's the thing - we almost always guess wrong about which problem we're dealing with.

How I got my sister to prevent 50kg of waste (without being preachy)

My sister had been showing some interest in sustainability stuff. She was definitely worried about climate change, but she kept saying she didn't know where to start and didn't have much money to spend on eco-friendly products.

Most environmentalists would have dumped a list of 47 things on her. Buy bamboo toothbrushes! Switch to organic everything! Install solar panels!

But I thought about the Fogg model first. She had motivation (worried about climate change) but low ability (no money, overwhelmed by options). What she needed was something simple that would actually save her money.

So I mentioned one thing: menstrual cups instead of pads. You're not Captain Planet today - you're Sherlock Holmes.

Step 2: Gather intelligence. Ask them about their experience with sustainable stuff like you're genuinely curious (because you should be). What have they tried? What worked? What was a total disaster? What feels impossible or expensive?

Step 3: Listen like a spy. Don't just wait for your turn to talk. Actually hear what they're saying. Are they missing motivation? Ability? Good prompts? Take mental notes.

Step 4: Deploy your secret weapon. Suggest ONE small thing that actually addresses the barrier they just told you about. Not the barrier you think they should have - the one they literally just described. And here's the key: frame it around solving their problem, not saving the planet. "Here's something that helped save me some money..." or "I found this trick that made my life way easier..." People care about their own problems first.

Step 5: Report back to headquarters. Try it and see what happens. Then tell me how it went - I'm collecting these field reports because they're way more entertaining than another doom-scroll about how we're all screwed.

The truth is, changing minds about the environment isn't magic. It's just psychology in disguise. And if social media platforms can crack the code, so can a bunch of people who actually give a damn about the planet.

But let's be real - you've still got a long road ahead. Changing minds and behavior is hard work. It takes knowledge, patience, and a lot of trial and error. This detective approach is just the beginning.

Here's the thing though - imagine if hundreds of us got good at this. If we all learned how to actually influence people instead of just preaching at them. One person changing one mind doesn't seem like much. But multiply that across a whole network of people who know what they're doing? That's how real change happens.

I'll keep sharing what I learn about the psychology of green persuasion, so consider subscribing if you want to build up your toolkit. Because the planet needs more people who know how to actually influence others, not just lecture them.

Subscribe now

P.S. Think you know other undercover environmentalists who could use these tactics? disasters before I'd even finished my coffee. By the time I got to work, I felt like the world was ending and it was somehow my fault for using a disposable cup.

Here's the thing I've noticed: environmental messaging has this weird obsession with scaring the living daylights out of people.

And I get it.

Climate change IS scary, pollution IS a real problem, and we DO need to act. But somewhere along the way, we got stuck in this cycle where the only way to talk about the environment is through pure, concentrated dread.

So How Does That Make You Feel?

Be honest with me here.

When you see those apocalyptic headlines, do you feel energized and ready to plant trees and change the world? Or do you feel more like... pulling the covers over your head and pretending none of it exists?

If you picked option two, you're definitely not alone. I spent months feeling like the world was ending and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. I'd read an article about rising sea levels and then stare at my reusable water bottle thinking, "What's the point? This tiny thing isn't going to save polar bears."

Turns out, there's actually research on this.

Scientists call it "eco-paralysis". Basically, when people feel overwhelmed by how massive these problems are, they just... shut down. It's like when your computer freezes because too many programs are running at once, except the program that's frozen is your motivation to do anything helpful.

The research is pretty eye-opening.

A team of Penn State researchers found that people who were bombarded with fear-based environmental messages were way more likely to just avoid the topic entirely or convince themselves it wasn't real.

Another 2024 study showed that high-fear messaging actually triggered what psychologists call "defensive behaviors." Essentially, our brains protect us from overwhelming information by either denying it or just tuning it out completely.

Think about it: when was the last time you saw a scary climate headline and thought, "You know what? I'm inspired to completely change my lifestyle right now!"

Probably never, right?

More likely, you felt that familiar knot in your stomach and maybe switched to looking at cat videos instead.

The Weird Thing About Doom Content

Here's where it gets really interesting (and a little depressing): those scary articles? They're incredibly good at one thing. Getting shared.

Researchers looked at 59,000 people across 63 countries and found that messages like "Climate change poses a serious threat to humanity" spread like wildfire on social media. People see them, get that jolt of "oh no, everyone needs to know about this," and hit share faster than you can say "carbon footprint."

I totally get this impulse. I've done it myself. Seen some terrifying statistic about plastic in the ocean and immediately shared it because it felt urgent and important. It feels like you're doing something, like you're part of the solution just by spreading awareness.

But here's the kicker.

All that sharing doesn't actually translate to people doing anything in real life. It's like when you share a post about a missing dog and feel like you've helped, even though you didn't actually go out looking. Psychologists call this "moral licensing." Basically, your brain tricks you into thinking you've done your good deed for the day.

The study found that people were way more likely to share intimidating climate messages online, but when researchers followed up to see if those same people had actually taken any real-world actions like planting trees or reducing their energy use, the numbers dropped dramatically. The sharing gave people a sense of accomplishment that actually reduced their motivation to do more tangible things.

Meanwhile, the constant stream of "the world is ending" news creates what experts are calling "eco-anxiety."

It's this chronic, low-level panic about environmental doom that just sits in the back of your mind. I've talked to friends who say they feel guilty every time they throw something away, or who lie awake at night worrying about what kind of world they're leaving for their kids.

And when people feel like the problem is impossibly huge and their individual actions are microscopic in comparison, they often end up doing... nothing. It's a psychological phenomenon where feeling powerless leads to actual powerlessness.

Why bother recycling when you read that 100 companies are responsible for 71% of emissions?

Why try to reduce your plastic use when you see images of garbage patches the size of Texas floating in the ocean?

Research from Penn State found that while scary environmental news definitely increases fear (no surprise there), it also makes people feel more helpless and less capable of making a difference. It's like telling someone their house is on fire but not showing them where the fire extinguisher is – or worse, convincing them that the fire extinguisher they have is basically useless.

I see this pattern everywhere now.

People who care deeply about the environment but feel so overwhelmed they've basically given up trying. Or people who used to be engaged but burned out from the constant emotional weight of it all. There's even a term for people who avoid environmental news entirely because it makes them too anxious: "solution aversion."

The Death Cycle Of Doom & Gloom Messages

So here we are, stuck in this weird place where the most attention-grabbing environmental content is also the least effective at getting people to actually care long-term or take action.

We've accidentally created this feedback loop where the scariest stories get the most clicks, which encourages more scary stories, which makes people more overwhelmed and less likely to engage meaningfully.

Don't get me wrong. I think the people creating this content genuinely want to help and raise awareness. Environmental journalists and activists are seeing real, urgent problems and trying to communicate that urgency. The intention is absolutely good. But somewhere along the way, we've accidentally made environmentalism feel like this heavy, guilt-inducing burden that most people just want to avoid.

I think about my own journey with this stuff, and how many times I almost gave up entirely because it felt too big, too scary, too hopeless. And I'm someone who actively chose to care about this topic! I can only imagine how it feels for people who are just casually interested or who stumble across these articles in their news feed.

And honestly? That breaks my heart a little.

Because caring about our planet should feel hopeful and empowering, not like carrying around a constant weight of impending doom. It should feel like being part of something bigger than yourself, not like being personally responsible for preventing the apocalypse.

If we really want to create a world where more people are excited to be part of environmental solutions, we need to completely rethink how we talk about this stuff. We need to show people that being environmentally conscious can actually make their lives better, not just prevent them from getting worse.

The good news?

I've been diving deep into the psychology behind what actually motivates people to act, and there are some pretty amazing strategies out there that we're barely using.

I'm putting together everything I've learned about this next week. That's just how households worked, right?

My Broke Young Adult Awakening

Then I got my first apartment and my first real grocery bill.

Holy shit!!! Everything was so expensive. The rent, the utilities, the food, and then all these random recurring purchases I'd never thought about. Cleaning supplies, personal care items, and yes, tissues and paper towels.

I remembered standing in the grocery store aisle, looking at a 6 pack of tissue boxes for $12, thinking "Didn't I just buy these last month?" The paper towel section was even worse.

Those fancy quilted ones my mom always bought? $15 for a 12 pack that would last maybe six weeks in my household.

It was one of those moments where I realized I've been unconsciously hemorrhaging money on stuff I took for granted.

So I did what any broke young person does. I went to Reddit.

The Reddit Rabbit Hole

I found myself scrolling through Reddit at 2 AM, reading posts about "unnecessary recurring expenses" and "things you can eliminate from your budget." That's where I first saw someone mention switching to cotton towels for everything.

My first thought? "That sounds gross."

My second thought? "But also... interesting."

Over 80% of comments were like "This changed my life!" and the other 20% were skeptical about hygiene and convenience.

But the savings stories were compelling. People were talking about eliminating $50 to $100 annually from their budgets just by buying a bunch of cotton towels once.

I was intrigued enough to do the math for my own situation.

Breaking Down the Real Costs

Let me walk you through the calculation that convinced me to try this experiment.

What we were actually spending:

My partner and I were going through about one tissue box every two weeks, plus paper towels for kitchen tasks. I started tracking our usage for a week and was honestly shocked.

Below were Our daily tissue and paper towel usage:

2 to 3 tissues for hand cleaning after cooking (we cook a lot)

1 to 2 paper towels for wiping down the table after meals

2 to 3 paper towels for kitchen cleanup (spills, counters, etc.)

1 to 2 tissues for patting meat dry before cooking

Random usage for runny noses, cleaning mirrors, whatever

Total: About 10 pieces of paper per day, between tissues and paper towels.

The math: 10 × 365 = 3,650 pieces annually

At roughly $0.013 per tissue (Amazon bulk pricing), that's about $47 per year Plus the inconvenience of constantly running out and having to restock

The cotton towel alternative: 6 premium cotton kitchen towels: About $24 upfront

Break even point: 1,756 pieces of paper (which equal to just about 5.8 months of usage, for a family of 2 adults)

After that: Pure savings for the 5+ years those towels would last.

Maybe even longer. I’m conservative with my assumptions here.

The math was compelling, but I was still skeptical about the practical side.

Share

The Test Run

I decided to try it gradually. Instead of throwing out all our paper products immediately, I bought three cotton towels and designated them for specific uses:

One towel for hand cleaning and table wiping.

One darker towel for kitchen cleanup and counter wiping.

One dedicated towel for meat prep and messier cooking tasks.

For the first week, I used cotton towels during the day and kept paper products as backup for when I forgot or felt weird about it.

Honestly? By day three, I preferred the towels.

They absorbed spills better than paper towels. They felt nicer on my hands. They didn't leave that weird papery residue that cheap paper towels sometimes do. And there was something satisfying about not generating a small pile of used paper every time I cooked dinner.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!lOyU!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F972363e7-b52c-4870-b4f5-ae65804da2af_1080x1080.png" width="1080" height="1080" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/972363e7-b52c-4870-b4f5-ae65804da2af_1080x1080.png","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":1080,"width":1080,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"Cotton Check Kitchen Towels - Set of 4 – There's something so freeing about crossing tissues off your shopping list forever. No more panicked trips back to the store. No more awkward moments when you're hosting and realize you're out of paper towels.

The convenience factor surprised me most. I used to keep backup tissue boxes in this tiny cabinet above my fridge that I could barely reach. Now that entire space is free for actual food storage.

The towels work better for most tasks. They're more absorbent, they don't fall apart when wet, and they feel better on your skin. My partner, who's particular about textures, actually prefers them for drying hands.

The realistic downsides:

You do have to wash them. For the cleaner towel, I throw them in with my weekly laundry, so it's not really extra work, but it's something to remember. And for the dirty one, I just put on my gloves, and hand wash them. 2 towel took me about 5 - 10 minutes at best to wash.

There's a mental adjustment period. For about a month, I'd automatically reach for the tissue box that wasn't there anymore. Old habits die hard.

Some things still need paper products. I kept a small pack of paper towels for truly gross cleanups (cleaning up after pets, dealing with raw meat packaging, etc.), but we use maybe one roll every few months now.

Unexpected benefits:

My kitchen looks less cluttered without tissue boxes everywhere. There's something aesthetically pleasing about having neat stacks of clean towels instead of cardboard boxes scattered around.

I feel weirdly proud every time I reach for a towel instead of generating waste. It's like a tiny daily reminder that I'm making a good choice for both my wallet and the environment.

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!2yU-!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F1341e7ab-6b8a-4050-8810-fd13b7d30fe0_1000x1000.jpeg" width="1000" height="1000" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/1341e7ab-6b8a-4050-8810-fd13b7d30fe0_1000x1000.jpeg","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":1000,"width":1000,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"Cotton Kitchen towel set 3 pcs - But when I calculated what we were actually preventing, the numbers were more significant than expected.

Our daily usage of 10 pieces of paper products translates to some measurable environmental impacts:

Weight and waste: One sheet of tissue paper typically weighs around 0.5 grams, while a single paper towel weighs about 1.2 grams. Based on our usage (roughly 5 tissues and 5 paper towel pieces daily), we were creating about 8.5 grams of paper waste daily, or 3.1 kg (6.8 pounds) annually.

Manufacturing water footprint: One ton of paper towels requires an estimated 17,000 gallons of water to produce. That's about 8.5 gallons per pound. For our 6.8 pounds of annual paper product consumption, that represents approximately 58 gallons of water used in manufacturing.

Carbon footprint: Using two standard paper towels has a carbon footprint of just over 15 grams of CO2. That breaks down to about 7.75 grams of CO2 per towel. For our household's annual usage, that's roughly 14 kg (31 pounds) of CO2 emissions from paper towel and tissue production.

The 5-Year Impact

Over five years, our paper product habit would generate:

34 pounds of paper waste

290 gallons of water consumption for manufacturing

155 pounds of CO2 emissions

Cotton Towels: The Alternative Impact

Six cotton towels require water and energy to manufacture and wash, but the lifecycle impact is much lower:

One-time manufacturing: The water to grow and process the cotton for these six towels is an estimated 40-60 gallons. This is a one-time cost.

Annual washing impact: Since the towels are washed with existing laundry loads, the additional water used is negligible. We can assume the water cost is absorbed by the laundry that would be done anyway. The only additional water cost would be for an extra rinse cycle or a slight increase in load size, which is minimal.

Net Environmental Savings over 5 Years

34 pounds less waste going to landfills

230-250 gallons of water saved

Significantly reduced CO2 emissions from avoided paper manufacturing

Share

Why This Works When Other Eco Swaps Don't?

I've tried other environmentally friendly switches before. Some worked (switching to bar soap), some didn't (reusable straws that I constantly forgot), and some had major learning curves (menstrual cups, which I eventually loved but took months to adjust to).

But this towel switch is different because it's immediately better in almost every way. More effective, more convenient, saves money, and helps the environment. There's no compromise or adjustment period required.

It's not like buying an expensive eco friendly product that makes you feel virtuous but breaks your budget. This is a one time purchase that improves your daily life while accidentally solving multiple problems.

Want to Try It?

If you're curious about making this switch, here's what I'd recommend:

Step 1: Start very small

Buy 2 to 3 cotton kitchen towels and test them for your most common paper towel uses. Live with them for a week and see how it feels.

Step 2: Calculate your actual usage.

You might be surprised by how many paper products your household goes through. Track it for a few days.

Think about your specific needs. Do you have small kids? Are you messy cooks? Do you entertain a lot? A solution so simple, so accessible, so effective that it puts every green product to shame?

What if I told you it costs absolutely nothing?

What if I told you it's been right there all along, hiding in a phrase so common that we stopped paying attention to what it actually means?

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

You've heard it a thousand times. But here's what no one ever emphasized: the order matters.

This isn't just a catchy slogan. It's a hierarchy. A priority system. Reduce comes first because it's the most effective. When that fails, reuse. When even that fails, then—and only then—recycle.

But somehow, we've gotten it backwards. We obsess over recycling (the least effective option) and completely ignore reduction (the most effective one). Why? Because there's no money in telling people to consume less.

The Power of Reduction

Let me give you a real example from my own life.

I used to buy boba tea every day after work. It was my little treat, my way to decompress. One cup, every day, wrapped in plastic, topped with a plastic lid, served with a plastic straw.

Then, for health reasons, I stopped. Not for the environment. For my own wellbeing.

But here's what happened: By eliminating that one daily habit, I prevented 365 plastic cups, 365 plastic lids, and 365 plastic straws from entering the waste stream. Every single year.

One person. One small change. 1,095 pieces of plastic eliminated annually.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Poof, all of this. Gone. Because I quit my drink.

I didn't buy a single eco-friendly product. I didn't spend a penny on green technology. I didn't even make the change for environmental reasons. And yet, the environmental impact was massive.

Now imagine if 1,000 people made a similar change. That's over a million pieces of plastic eliminated. What about 10,000 people? A million?

Why Nobody Talks About This

The reason reduction isn't marketed to you is simple: there's no profit in it.

A company can't sell you "not buying their product." There's no premium markup on "using what you already have." There's no subscription model for "questioning whether you need this at all."

Reduction is the enemy of consumption, and consumption is the lifeblood of our economy. So instead, companies have rebranded consumption as environmentalism, and most of us have bought it—literally.

But here's the beautiful irony: reduction doesn't just help the planet more than any green product ever could. It also helps your wallet.

Every plastic cup I didn't buy saved me money. Every unnecessary purchase I avoided put cash back in my pocket. Every time I chose to repair instead of replace, I came out ahead financially.

This is environmental action that makes you richer, not poorer. It's accessible to everyone, regardless of income level. In fact, it helps the people who need it most—those of us who are broke.

Subscribe now

The Reduce-First Mindset

So how do you start? It's simpler than you think.

Step 1: Audit your habits

Look at your daily routine. What do you consume automatically, without thinking? Coffee cups? Plastic water bottles? Fast fashion? Convenience foods?

Step 2: Question everything

Before any purchase, ask yourself three questions:

Do I actually need this?

Do I already have something that serves this purpose?

What would happen if I didn't buy this at all?

Step 3: Start small

Pick one habit. Just one. Maybe it's your daily coffee cup, like my boba tea. Maybe it's those Amazon impulse purchases. Maybe it's the new clothes you buy every season.

Change that one thing. See what happens.

Step 4: Count the impact

Keep track of what you're NOT consuming. It's incredibly motivating to realize that your small change eliminated hundreds or thousands of waste items per year.

Beyond Personal Choices

Now, I'm not saying individual action is the only solution to climate change. Systemic problems require systemic solutions, and corporations bear far more responsibility than individuals.

But here's what I am saying: you have more power than you realize, and you don't need to spend money to exercise it.

Every time you choose reduction over consumption, you're voting with your wallet. You're refusing to participate in the guilt economy. You're proving that environmentalism doesn't require wealth.

And maybe, just maybe, you're inspiring others to question the narrative they've been sold.

The Real Revolution

The most radical thing you can do in a consumption-driven society is to stop consuming.

Not completely though. We're not talking about becoming hermits. But consciously, deliberately, strategically.

When enough people start reducing instead of buying, the entire green-washing industry starts to crumble. When people realize they can save the planet AND save money, the premium pricing on eco-products becomes impossible to justify.

When reduction becomes popular, companies will have no choice but to actually reduce their environmental impact instead of just selling us products that make us feel better about it.

Your $0 Action Plan

So here's my challenge to you:

Identify one wasteful habit in your life. Just one.

Eliminate it for 30 days.

Track the impact—count every item you didn't consume, every dollar you didn't spend.

Share your results. Show others that the most effective environmental action costs nothing.

Remember: before you buy the biodegradable alternative, ask if you need to buy anything at all.

Before you invest in the latest green technology, see if you can solve the problem by using less.

Before you feel guilty about not affording eco-friendly products, remember that not buying anything is more eco-friendly than buying the greenest product on earth.

The greenest thing you can do costs $0. It always has.

The question is: are you ready to stop paying premium prices for your environmental conscience?

If this article changed how you think about environmentalism, share it with someone who's been guilt-tripped into buying green products they can't afford. So naturally, I would stock up on menstrual pads in my cabinet, thinking I'm being responsible and shit.

But here's the thing - one month, I'd be worried the pads would run out, so I'd stock up more. Then I'd feel all rest assured like "okay this cannot run out yet." And then several months later, BAM - suddenly I have NO pads in the house and I'm running to the store while bleeding and hoping no one sees me in my bloody jeans.

The stress was low key there ALL the time. Also, pads are freaking expensive. As a broke teenager buying pads with my allowance? Yeah, that sucked.

Even now, after getting a job, I still cry internally when I pay for menstrual pads. I often wish I was born male at that exact moment at checkout, especially when I do the math...

The Annoying Monthly Subscription of Menstrual Pads (That We Never Signed Up For)

My period lasts about 5 days on average. I need to change pads 3 times a day for basic hygiene. So 5 x 3 = 15 pads per period.

Let's say a pack of 36 pads costs around $7, which is about $0.19 per pad.

Monthly cost: 15 × $0.19 = $2.85

Yearly cost: $2.85 × 12 = about $34

Lifetime cost (40 years): $34 × 40 = $1,360

For guys reading this - imagine having a monthly subscription that you NEVER signed up for, that costs you money every single month, and doesn't get automatically delivered. One day you just wake up in a pool of blood and walk to your cabinet trying to find spare pads. There were none...

Yeah, this happened to me SO many times. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

I was lowkey annoyed and furious sometimes, but I kinda accepted it. I didn't think there was an alternative. Guess being female subjects us to this, right?

Thank god I was so wrong.

Share

The Facebook Post That Changed My Damn Life

One day while doomscrolling, I came across this post from someone in my friend group. She was sharing an honest review about trying different menstrual products. Not sponsored or anything, just genuinely sharing her thoughts.

I DM'd her IMMEDIATELY. Asked her a million questions about her experience and what she'd recommend for my situation.

She said: "You might be suited for a period cup. It's expensive initially, but you can carry it anywhere and it lasts about 5 years with proper care."

That simple sentence got me moving. Period cups aren't as common as pads or tampons, so I'd never heard of them before. I spent one morning researching different brands on Amazon, asking sellers about sizing, all that stuff.

Then I just bought one. $30 total. (Not sharing the exact brand because I don't want you thinking this is some affiliate marketing bullshit.)

Three Years with My Cup (And Why I'm Never Going Back)

Three years later, I'm still happily using my cup. I just toss it in my bag and carry it everywhere - work, travel, wherever.

It's saved me SO much stress and potential embarrassment.

Like this one time I started bleeding while I was in a pool. I panicked for like two seconds, then remembered I had my cup with me. Just got up, went to the changing room, washed the blood off my swimsuit, put the cup in, and kept swimming for 10 more laps.

You literally CANNOT do that with pads. They get wet, they're visible under your bikini, and the thought of blood mixing with pool water makes me want to die.

Or when I was trekking deep in the mountains with no shops around. I could've been bleeding through my pants the whole trek. Lucky I remembered to bring my cup.

And no more monthly pad subscription. No more bloody pants nightmares.

Share

The Environmental Thing I Didn't Expect to Care About

I used to think going green was for rich people with too much time. Everyone knows it's good for the environment, we should all do it, blah blah.

But I'm just a normal girl with no time and no money. The environment was always an afterthought when I'm struggling with basic stuff.

Then one day, after using my cup for 2 years, I noticed something: I wasn't throwing out gross bloody pad trash every month anymore.

Think about it - used menstrual pads are covered in blood, which is gross and sticky and basically impossible to recycle. Most of a disposable pad (like 90%) is plastic. Each pad has as much plastic as FOUR plastic shopping bags.

There's basically no system to recycle that mess. In Europe and the US, over 80% of menstrual products just end up in landfills. The plastic takes 500-800 years to break down.

I asked Google to calculate how much waste I'd produce in my lifetime (assuming 40 menstruating years), and the numbers horrified me:

13 periods per year × 15 pads per period = 195 pads yearly

195 pads × 40 years = 7,800 pads total

At about 8 grams per pad = 62.4 kg of period waste

That's 137 pounds of bloody pad trash from just ME

Now multiply that by the billions of people who menstruate... yeah, no wonder our planet is drowning in trash.

All that research made me feel extra glad about my cup. It was hassle at first, but I saved stress, money, AND accidentally went green. Huge win.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I had tons of hesitation before trying it:

Learning curve: Getting it in and out is tricky at first. You gotta find the right folding technique and figure out what works for your body.

The "ick" factor: Emptying and cleaning can be gross, especially in public bathrooms. Lucky for me, toilets in my country usually have bidets, so it's easier.

Upfront cost: $30 feels like a lot when you're used to $7 pad boxes. But it pays for itself after like 10 months, which is still totally worth it.

If Cups Aren't Your Thing

If you're not comfortable with something going inside you (especially if you haven't had sex yet), then cups might not be for you right now. That's totally fine.

Other alternatives that have similar benefits:

Period Discs - Some people could never do the period cup, but they have great experience with the disc. I have not try them myself, so I can’t give any real advice here.

For people who don’t like the idea of inserting something inside, but still want to go budget + substainable:

Period underwear - looks normal but absorbs everything

Reusable cloth pads - wash and reuse, way cheaper than
